Green fields, blue cruises, ancient marbles and the Mediterranean sun make Marmaris the most popular hot spot of the Turkish coast.
A small, beautiful bay surrounded by pine-covered hills, an ancient castle that presides over its harbour, a sandy beach, the cobbled streets of the old town and a multitude of options for excursions and activities, make Marmaris one of the most popular destinations along the Turkish coast.
If you¢re in an adventurous mood, Marmaris offers several exciting options for day trips – organised excursions usually go on until the late afternoon, or you could rent a car or one of the small boats available at the port, and be more independent. Visit ancient Ephesus, the Dalyan with the famous mud baths, or opt for a jeep safari to experience the nature of the Asia Minor coast – still unspoilt by mass tourism – in the most adventurous way! Visit the Marmaris National Park, rich in flora and a shelter for endemic and endangered animals. You can also go diving (PADI – CMAS – BSAC) or indulge in a unique and unforgettable experience of rejuvenation and wellbeing, in the traditional eastern way, by visiting an Eastern hammam.
A visit to the island of Cleopatra, with silky-smooth sand made of shells! Rumour has it that this island was the secret meeting place of Cleopatra and Mark Antony and that the latter brought the sand from Egypt as a present for his beloved. You can reach the island from Gelibolu bay, which is 30 minutes away from Marmaris.
The majestic castle, according to Herodotus, existed since 3000 B.C. When Alexander the Great placed it under siege, the residents attempted to destroy it, along with all of their fortunes, so it wouldn¢t fall into the hands of the enemy. The besiegers, however, well aware of its strategic significance, restored the parts that had been destroyed and used it as a fortress. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent renovated it from the foundations up, and used it as the base of the Ottoman navy, for his attacks on the island of Rhodes. Today, you may visit its charming garden and the wing that operates as an exhibition area. The harbour, with its two marinas, is a popular destination for tourist boats and private yachts. In Marmaris you will find small souvenir stores, as well as the traditional eastern bazaar (market), at its prime on Thursdays and Sundays, tiny coffee shops serving honey-drenched desserts, and all the comforts of a modern tourist resort. Enjoy a stroll along the seafront or meander through the alleyways of the old town, for a more authentic atmosphere and look out for the famous honey of the area, as well as handmade rugs and silk garments.
